First impressions are everything. Your website is the first impression someone will have of you, before they even meet you. Your about page will be one of the first pages your website visitors will click. You should make sure your about page is an accurate and professional representation of you and your business.

If your business isn’t easy to explain to someone, this is where you will simplify it. Assume the visitor hasn’t even heard of the service you offer. Keep jargon to a minimum and use descriptions that can be easily understood. This is your page to shine, so you’ll want to make sure it represents you in the best possible light.

When writing your about page, here are four key points we advise our clients to do:

 

Consider the audience you are trying to reach.

Before you begin writing, think about who is going to be reading this page. Will it be women between 25-35? Parents? Or business owners? Consider the type of person who is most likely to read your about page and write as though you are talking directly to them. Think about what appeals to them and what interests them.

 

Show off a photo of you or your team

People are very visual. They need to be able to picture who is talking to them. This picture should be high-resolution and professional. Feel free to show personality in your photo but keep in mind, sometimes cheesy does not appeal to everyone.

 

 

Explain why you are the best

This page should show off your knowledge of the industry you’re in. Here is where you convince page visitors that you are confident and competent at your job. Give a humblebrag here and there but remain approachable. Any awards or recognitions should be featured in your about page.

 

Include unique sentiments that make you stand out

Whether it is how you got started in the industry or something you like to do in your spare time, be sure to include a section of how you are different among the others in your industry. These are the points your visitors will remember. Maybe you run marathons in your spare time, or maybe you are a wine connoisseur. These little bits are what make you relatable and what will make someone want to pick up the phone and give you a call. If you have a team page, advise your team to write about their job, while also adding personal details that make them unique as individuals in the company.
